Oil falls as US Gulf Coast storm heads inland

(AP) ? Oil prices fell Thursday after a powerful storm that had shut down refineries along the U.S. Gulf Coast started to ease as it moved inland.

Benchmark oil for October delivery was down 47 cents at midday Bangkok time to $95.02 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 84 cents to finish at $95.49 per barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.

Traders were watching for any reports of significant damage from Hurricane Isaac as it passed over oil facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm's heavy winds and rain were not expected to cause extensive damage to oil production and refinery operations.

"Although a lot of the production capacity was closed down, it was a precautionary measure and we're not hearing any reports of significant damage," said Nick Trevethan, senior commodities strategist at ANZ Research in Singapore. "There have been some power outages that may interfere with the restart of some onshore facilities."

Trevethan said markets were waiting for U.S. Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke's highly anticipated speech Friday at an economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Market watchers are hoping for signs that Bernanke might hint at some kind of Fed action to spur growth in the U.S.

They are also anticipating the release of manufacturing data out of China. Worse-than-expected numbers could put pressure on Beijing for more stimulus measures to help revive growth in the world's No. 2 economy.

"The market is really marking time ahead of the Jackson Hole meeting and Chinese data coming out over the weekend," Trevethan said. "A weak number might have the market thinking about stimulus."

In other energy trading, heating oil rose marginally to $3.124 per gallon. Natural gas slipped slightly to $2.683 per 1,000 cubic feet.

89% Compliance

Despite a fantastic lead performance, COMPLIANCE, which sparked controversy at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, is a one-note trial to endure. Basically, the famous Milgram Experiments brought to life, COMPLIANCE is a real-time look at how far we're willing to go to please authority figures. When a fast food manager is asked by a calling police officer to detain one of her employees for a possible theft, things escalate quickly on the discomfort scale. Had the story developed further than just one long phone call, I would have liked it better, but as it is, it's completely monotonous. The officer keeps asking the fast food employees to detain, question, strip search, and more the seemingly innocent young woman, and everyone pretty much complies, because they don't want to look bad in the eyes of the law. This is a completely valid premise for a film, making us question our own naivete. But it just goes on and on, hitting the same drumbeat each and every time. Ann Dowd, however, deserves special mention for quite the bravura turn as the manager. A cog in the wheel who just wants to do the right thing, she's at turn needy, brazen, and heartbreaking. This veteran actor knows how to keep you riveted. I believed every second of her performance while not believing much of anything else, and this is a film based on true events! Most scenes drag on too long, especially a pointless, endless shot of a police officer driving to the scene in one, long extended take. WHY? WHY? WHY? I admire that this film wants to explore a vulnerable part of human behavior, but without much in the way of a story, this whole thing would have been better off as an article in Psychology Today. It's clearly intended to be a screw-turning, intense experience, but it's mostly sad and numbing.

Lessons from Penn State | Idaho Business Review

by Denise McClure
Published: August 29,2012
Time posted: 2:55 pm

Louis Freeh?s report, recently made public in the media, highlighted a series of failures at Penn State that led to a cover up of Jerry Sandusky?s sexual abuse.

Freeh cites numerous individual failings, along with ?weaknesses of the university?s culture, governance, administration, compliance policies and procedures for protecting children.?

What Penn State lacked more than anything was a culture of accountability. Penn State?s president hid problems from the board of trustees. Penn State didn?t put policies in place for complying with laws and regulations for reporting violence and sexual abuse. Penn State didn?t train employees on how and when to report abuse. The administration?s casual attitude toward procedures, safety, compliance and accountability precipitated its fall from grace.

Penn State?s shortcomings stemmed from its ?insular and complacent culture.? Neither the trustees nor top officials valued accountability or transparency. The president didn?t even inform the trustees of the potential criminal investigation after testifying before a grand jury regarding the allegations swirling around Sandusky.

When I do an internal control risk assessment, the first step is evaluating the ?tone at the top.? Does the organization value a culture of integrity and accountability? Is there a ?real? code of ethics, or is it just a list of values employees are required to sign? Are the organization?s values any more than a pretty poster hanging on the wall? Do leaders walk the walk, or do they just talk the talk?

The collective actions of all top officials set the tone for an organization and define its culture. What do your actions say about the culture of your organization?

What you say only matters if it is reflected in your behavior. No matter how articulate you are at ?talking the talk,? it is your actions that send a message to employees, customers, donors and other stakeholders.

Whether it?s embezzlement, safety, regulatory compliance or abuse, your employees know what you stand for. They know whether you stand for accountability and integrity, or complacency and moral ambiguity.

Here are a few tips for creating a culture of accountability:

1. Develop a code of ethics. Public companies are required to have a code of conduct or ethics, so you can find an abundance of examples with a simple Internet search. Beware the three-page code of conduct typed in 8-pitch font. Its message is that you care more about catching people doing something wrong than behaving ethically. Keep it simple. Make it memorable. Use it to guide decisions.

2. Demand accountability during the hiring process. Check references and verify relevant credentials. Make hiring contingent on broad background and criminal history checks. Do you want to hire a driver with four DUIs? Dou you want to hire a convicted embezzler to manage your finances?

3. Subscribe to a hotline service so your employees, vendors and other interested parties can let you know if they see a safety, compliance or process violation. A hotline (also known as an anonymous incident reporting service) can be instrumental in identifying wayward behaviors in the early stages. It?s important that tips be provided anonymously so fear of retribution doesn?t inhibit reporting.

4. Accept mistakes. Penn State perpetrated a coverup because, in their cultural world, bad publicity was to be avoided at all costs ? even at the expense of children being victimized. It?s better to admit mistakes, take corrective actions and learn from them.

Penn State leaders should have sat in on a business ethics course at the university. Two popular business ethics and public relations case studies involve the Ford Pinto?s exploding fuel tank and Johnson & Johnson?s reaction to Tylenol tampering deaths in the late ?70s and early ?80s.

Ford placed more value on trunk space than safety. Ford knew of the fuel tank design flaw before production, but decided it would be cheaper to pay off lawsuits than to resolve the problem with an $11 part. Ford paid punitive & compensatory damages in lawsuits, and is still the target of negative publicity for its decision to put profits before people.

Compare Ford?s decisions to Johnson & Johnson?s actions when seven people in the Chicago area died after ingesting cyanide laced Tylenol capsules. J&J issued a nationwide recall of more than 31 million bottles, costing the company $100 million. This sense of corporate responsibility is part of the J&J credo, penned by Robert Wood Johnson in the 1940s before the company went public. The J&J credo puts the people who use their products first, followed by employees and their communities; stockholders are last.

J&J was applauded for its honesty and openness in dealing with the crisis. Its leaders? decisions were guided by its ?people before profit? philosophy, and it remains a respected company today.

Penn State put reputation before safety and responsibility. Let?s hope Penn State and similarly complacent organizations learn from their mistakes.

Trust, but verify.

Baghdad orphan Kelly eyes pool gold for Australia

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - He has described himself as the happiest man alive, yet in 20 years Iraq-born swimmer Ahmed Kelly has risen above extreme hardship to become one of Australia's leading medal hopes at the London Paralympics.

Kelly, along with his brother Emmanuel, was born severely disabled, with under-developed limbs as a result of their parents' exposure to chemical weapons.

He was left on an orphanage doorstep in Baghdad, a world away from the Aquatic Center pool that he will dive into for his 100 freestyle, 50 breaststroke and 150 individual medley events starting next week.

In 2000, the boys were brought to Australia for surgery and were adopted by humanitarian Moira Kelly, who would later add Trishna and Krishna to the family, conjoined twins who were separated in a groundbreaking surgery in 2009.

Kelly took to Australia's sports-mad culture with gusto, and loved playing Australian Rules football with prosthetic limbs.

But the high-contact indigenous football code took a toll on his body, and he later took up swimming after participating in the Australian Paralympic Committee's talent identification program.

Kelly, who swims with prosthetic legs but without arms, was paired with coach Brad Kelly, who has helped him channel raw determination into stunning success.

"When we started, I had a guy with no arms and legs who wanted to be the best he could be," Harris told Reuters.

"There's nothing too hard for him ... He'll always say yes."

Kelly soon began competing at an elite level and broke the world record in the 100 breaststroke in 2010 and 2011.

Now, only four years after he first began swimming, the 20-year-old is competing in his first Paralympics.

The journey to London has been far from easy.

To qualify, Kelly has had to shift from racing the 100 breaststroke -- an endurance event in Paralympic terms -- to sprinting in the 50 distance.

While mastering the new discipline and training hard in his other events, Kelly has had to juggle school work while supporting his mother's charity, the Children First Foundation.

"It has been difficult, but you have to do your best," Kelly told Reuters. "It's tough, but it's meant to be tough ... You have to know what you're doing every lap for."

Kelly and his coach Harris remain as ambitious as ever.

"I love sports, I want to keep swimming well, keep adapting, and I'm still learning about these things," said Kelly, who has already set his heart on competing at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio.

"I want to get the best out of myself. But everyone has been so supportive and I couldn't have done it without them."

The Best Collection Of Web Design Tips : Internet Business Blog ...

Creating a top-notch website can be a daunting task. If you don?t have much experience, this can be extremely frightening. There?s a lot to think about, such as the layout and the color scheme. Additionally, you always have to be abreast of the current trends. This article will help inform you as you consider the design and layout of your site.

White is an effective and visually attractive background color for a website. Using white helps visitors be able to read your website, and gives your site a more professional look. If you make your background design too complicated, however, it?ll distract your visitors and detract It?s usually better to keep your background simple.

Do your best to store any personal information of your users so that they don?t have to enter it over and over again on your site. An example of this is if someone fills out a form to register, and then has to fill out other forms for other things. If the person?s info transfers from one form to the next, it will be much more convenient and less time consuming for the user. Doing this will make everything much easier for the people that visit your page, and they will definitely appreciate the time saved.

Be conscious of your background. Your background should not be too distracting and allow your reader to read the text easily. Select a wallpaper complementary to the rest of your design, so that your users will be able to negotiate the site more easily.

If you plan to design your own site, you should use grid hosting or shared hosting. These options are superior to VPS or dedicated hosting. You don?t know your site?s traffic load, and there is no reason to overpay.

Use your artistic skills to design websites. Do not be afraid to run with an inspiration when it strikes. If you?re eating out and an idea comes to you, be sure to jot that idea on your napkin. Even if you?re busy with something else, at your job, for example, you can preserve a new idea by calling yourself and leaving a reminder on your voice mail.

If you are determined to purchase a particular domain name, but discover that it is already in use, you should visit some auction sites that sell used domain names, for example Sedo. You?ll see many potential names for your domain that are up for sale.

Make sure someone is testing your site for proper functioning as you are designing each step. When you finish a new site feature, have an impartial observer test it and give feedback. A video that loads slowly may mean nothing to you, but someone else may disagree. Even more importantly, a video may load quickly for you, but not load at all for someone else. Always get outside opinions.

Captchas are useful for preventing automated registration, but should be used sparingly. Visitors dislike captchas, and dislike the feeling that they must solve a complicated problem just to see a web page. All but a site?s biggest fans will leave if they have to fill out too many CAPTCHAs.

To make the most of your site?s space, you need not assume that every single pixel must be accounted for and packed with images, text and videos. White space on your site actually improves the readability; your visitors will have a much easier time reading and absorbing the information if things aren?t cluttered.

Many people find it very helpful to subscribe to a newsletter for website designers. This offers periodic updates and ideas that will be useful for developing a site. Anyone can gain from the information contained in a newsletter, regardless of experience.

Be sure that all your website?s links are up-to-date and work properly. Good web design should always be easy to navigate, and free of error messages. Check your site daily for any problems, and make important updates as often as necessary.

The copy/paste feature is invaluable when it comes to creating a variety of pages for a subcategory within your website. Do not waste time by creating original HTML code for each page on your site. Instead, duplicate the main code, make any necessary adjustments, then save the code as a unique file. You can re-use a single ?master? set of code to churn out a virtually unlimited number of pages.

There are many free programs available to help you develop your website. Though expensive software is certainly available, free products can work just as well when it comes to setting up and running your site. All that is required from you is a little bit of effort in finding and choosing the free tools that will give you just what you?re looking for.

As you decide on advertisements for your site, keep limits in mind as to the amount you include. Having lots of ads can make your site seem unprofessional and spammy. Limit your ads to those which are relevant to your content and target market.

When you include videos on your site, you need to be aware that not everyone has a high Internet bandwidth. If you choose conversion at 5,000 kilobytes per second, that may overwhelm some users? connections. This means a very slow-loading video that?s going to buffer every other second.

Web design includes every aspect of a site, right down to its background and fonts. Website design doesn?t have to be difficult despite the fact that so many factors need to be considered. Use the information you?ve learned from this article to help you build an attractive and successful website

Romney plays it safe, delays convention start

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? In the end, Mitt Romney chose not to tempt fate.

With Tropical Storm Isaac bearing down on Florida, the soon-to-be Republican presidential nominee scrapped at least the first day of his national convention, mindful of the good politics of putting safety before, well, politics.

Top Romney aides and Republican National Committee officials scrambled late Saturday behind closed doors to shrink a four-day schedule of events into three for a convention that had been set to open with a sweeping indictment of President Barack Obama's economic stewardship. They said they hoped to begin laying out a revised schedule on Sunday, and it wasn't immediately clear what parts of the agenda would stay and what parts would go.

Nor was it clear whether there would be more delays. Romney's team was preparing for more schedule changes in case Isaac makes landfall elsewhere in Florida, requiring assistance from the brigades of police, national guard and emergency workers assigned to the convention.

Weather-related woes were always a risk when Republicans chose to hold their convention in Florida during hurricane season, a decision made well before Romney locked up the nomination.

Enter Isaac.

With forecasters predicting heavy rains and powerful wind, Romney's team huddled to weigh the pros and cons of cutting the convention short as well as worst-case scenarios. Romney ended up betting that losing a day of his party was less costly than going forward with his four-day plans and angering residents of a state he needs to win.

"The safety of those in Isaac's path is of the utmost importance," campaign said in a tweet.

In truth, Romney had little choice but to truncate his convention.

Insisting on a four-day affair could have put delegates' safety at risk, while tying up law enforcement and emergency officials who otherwise would be dispatched to deal with storm fallout. That would have left a black mark on the convention, with potentially lasting political consequences in a critical battleground state. Polls show Romney narrowly trailing Obama in this state, worth a giant cache of 29 Electoral College votes in a race to amass 270 needed for victory.

It didn't appear that the postponement would cost Romney much in political terms, since the television networks had already announced they would not be carrying any of Monday's events live. Because of that, Romney's team already had moved Ann Romney's convention speech ? essentially her debut on the national stage ? to Tuesday to ensure TV viewers would see it.

At most, Romney was losing a night of speeches planned to castigate Obama on his handling of the economy.

"Even though the days will be abbreviated, I absolutely believe we'll be able to get our message out," senior Romney adviser Russ Schriefer, in charge of the convention's planning, said.

This wasn't the first time a GOP convention ran into hurricane-related trouble.

Four years ago, would-be GOP nominee John McCain postponed the start of the convention in St. Paul, Minn., when a Hurricane Gustav threatened Louisiana ? 1,200 miles away.

The sensitivities among politicians to impending natural disasters come in the wake of 2005's devastating Gulf Coast hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the criticism Republican President George W. Bush faced for his handling of the chaos.

Mindful of the danger of appearing to put politics before safety, Vice President Joe Biden, the Obama campaign's surrogate-in-chief, canceled a campaign swing through Florida on Monday and Tuesday.

And Obama was keeping tabs on the developments from afar, and dispatching the Federal Emergency Management Agency to assist.

The president had no immediate plans to visit. But he might ? as most presidents do ? if the damage is severe. And if he does, Romney would have to weigh whether to proceed with his convention or scrap more parts of it ? and cede the limelight to the man who holds the office he wants.

In Tampa, RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said the decision to start the GOP convention Tuesday was unanimous, although Romney aides said there was some vocal dissent.

Egypt reopens Gaza border crossing for passengers

(AP) ? An Egyptian security official says Egypt has reopened its passenger terminal with the Gaza Strip and resumed normal operations there after nearly three weeks of disruption following a deadly attack on Egyptian soldiers by Islamic militants.

The official said from inside the Rafah crossing that it will be open six days a week, with normal security measures. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief reporters.

The closure of the terminal raised tensions between Egypt's Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, of the Muslim Brotherhood, and Gaza's ruling Hamas, which had hoped Morsi would end the enclave's five-year isolation.

Egypt shut down the terminal after 16 Egyptian soldiers were shot dead by masked gunmen while breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan on Aug. 5.

Mars rover tracks spell out Morse code message (+video)

During its first test drive on Mars, NASA's Curiosity rover left a Morse code imprint on the Red Planet's surface, a tribute to the one-ton robot's maker.

By Robert Z. Pearlman,?SPACE.com / August 23, 2012

Tracks from the Mars rover Curiosity's first test drive include the name of its maker, 'JPL' spelled out in Morse code.

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has left its first tracks in the Martian soil, imprinting the coded mark of its maker in its trail.

On Wednesday (Aug. 22), the car-size, six-wheeled rover took its first test drive since arriving on the Red Planet more than two weeks ago. Its drivers back on Earth ordered Curiosity to roll forward about 15 feet, (4.5 meters), turn right and then back up about 8 feet (2.5 m), such that when the robot stopped it was positioned to the left and roughly perpendicular to where it touched down inside Mars' Gale Crater.

"You can see in the tracks how we drive forward, and then you can see roughly a circle, which is where the rover did what we call its turn-in-place maneuver," said lead rover planner Matthew Heverly, of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "So it steered all of its wheels and then performed a turn of a 120 degrees, pivoting about a point in the center of that circle, and then it backed up."

Curiosity's path to its new parking spot was emblazoned on the Martian surface by a series of dash and dot tread marks left in the soil by each of the rover's 20-inch diameter (50-centimeter) wheels. [Photos from Curiosity's First Drive on Mars]

The track pattern ? dot-dash-dash-dash, dot-dash-dash-dot, dot-dash-dot-dot (".--- .--. .-..") ? spells out "JPL" in Morse code, which translates letters and numbers into a series of short ("dot") and long ("dash") signals.

Curiosity's signature wheel-print was a nod to NASA's lead center for unmanned planetary exploration, which built the rover and now commands it as Curiosity prepares to explore Mars in search of conditions habitable to past or present life.

The dashes and dots are more than just an autograph on the ground. They serve as "visual odometry" marks, which allow Curiosity's engineers to determine the position and orientation of the rover, as well as how far it traveled, by analyzing images of its tracks.

"We have intentionally put holes in the wheels to leave a unique track on Mars," Heverly said. "So if we are in sand dunes where we don't have lots of rock features around us, we can use those patterns to do our visual odometry."

In addition to the Morse code JPL, Curiosity's wheels also feature a zigzag cleat pattern.

Check out, then roll out

Curiosity's short test drive was the latest in a series of instrument and equipment checkouts that the rover needs to pass before heading out toward its first major science target.

Earlier this week, Curiosity extended its 7-foot (2.1-m) robotic arm, which is capped by a turret of tools including a camera, drill, spectrometer, scoop and the mechanisms for sieving and portioning samples of powdered rock and soil.

"We unstowed the robotic arm and took a look at the tools on [its] end. It's kind of a Swiss army knife there where we have a lot of instruments," said Curiosity mission manager Michael Watkins of JPL. "We wanted to make sure all of that was working by doing these first motor checks, and all of that went successfully."

Fresno St. Bulldogs 2012 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Predictions

Pat Hill did a ton for the Fresno State Bulldogs. He put this small school on the map by challenging the big boys and winning a lot of games. Hill was fired after an ugly 4-9 season in 2011. Now, it will be up to Tim DeRuyter to get the school going back in the right direction.

Mountain West 2012-2013 College Football Previews: Fresno State Bulldogs

Head Coach: Tim DeRuyter

2011 Record: 4-9

Fresno State Gambling Odds from JustBet to win BCS Championship: (Part of Field) +1,800

Fresno State Gambling Odds from 5Dimes to win Mountain West: +850

Fresno State shifts over from the WAC to the Mountain West, which means they?ll have Boise State and Nevada to deal with in the conference. DeRuyter is expected to install a spread offense, so the team must adjust to some new schemes. Fresno State doesn?t have a loaded team right now, but this is a squad with far more talent than most new coaches inherit.

Team Strengths:

The huge area of strength for Fresno State is the entire backfield. Robbie Rouse is a workhorse in the backfield who leads by example. Rouse is only 5?7 and 185 pounds, but he needs only 317 yards to become the school?s all-time leading rusher. He is a great receiver out of the backfield, and he carried the ball 329 times last season. Derek Carr gives the team a very good quarterback as well. Carr set a school sophomore record with 3,544 yards passing last year. ReRuyter loves how quickly Carr is picking up the spread offense. No team in this league can match talent with Fresno State in the backfield.

Fresno State is fortunate to have two extremely good defensive tackles. Anthony Williams and Tyeler Davison are big guys who clog up the middle of the defense. Fresno State will be switching to a 3-4 defense this year, and these two will be great anchors at the front of the defense.

Team Weaknesses:

The wide receiver spot took a huge hit when Jalen Saunders transferred in the offseason. Fresno State is going to be setting up with four wide receivers most of the time this year, but most of those receivers are unproven. There are plenty of guys with athleticism, but will any of them be reliable pass catchers for Carr?

The team will need four starting linebackers in the new system, which means there will be lots of question marks. Senior Travis Brown is a very good backer, but the rest of the unit is a concern. The coaches are convinced many of the younger players here will be good, but there is definitely a learning curve at the linebacker spot. Fresno State was bad at this spot in 2011, and I expect the same in 2012.

2012-2013 Fresno State Bulldogs Football Prediction: 8-5

The trip to Oregon in September will be brutal, but the rest of the schedule doesn?t look as tough as normal. Fresno State is a team that has far more talent than their 4-9 record showed last year. DeRuyter is stepping into a very good situation because this team is very likely to turn it around right away.

Carr and Rouse should lead this team to quite a few wins, and I?m guessing the defense will be a bit better than last year. Look for seven or eight wins from Fresno State in 2012.

UCI asks USADA to explain case against Armstrong

(AP Photo/Christophe Ena, File)

(AP) ? The International Cycling Union will wait for the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency to explain why Lance Armstrong should lose his seven Tour de France titles before commenting on the case.

The sport's governing body said Friday it expects USADA to submit documents "to the parties concerned," as the case threatens to wipe a cycling icon almost out of the record books.

"The UCI recognizes that USADA is reported as saying that it will strip Mr. Armstrong of all results from 1998 onwards in addition to imposing a lifetime ban from participating in any sport which recognizes the World Anti-Doping Code," the Switzerland-based organization said in a statement.

"As USADA has claimed jurisdiction in the case the UCI expects that it will issue a reasoned decision" explaining the action taken, the UCI said, adding that legal procedures obliged USADA to fulfill this demand in cases "where no hearing occurs."

Armstrong has chosen not to pursue an arbitration hearing where he could have fought charges brought by U.S. anti-doping officials that his teams doped when he won the Tour from 1999-2005.

The UCI and USADA have engaged in a turf war over who should prosecute allegations against Armstrong.

Armstrong disputes that USADA has power to re-write cycling results, and uncertainty remains over what role the ASO sports promotion company which organizes the Tour de France will have in the process.

Armstrong insisted his decision to decline arbitration was not an admission of guilt, but a refusal to enter a process he believes is unfair.

"Lance has never withdrawn from a fair fight in his life so his decision today underlines what an unjust process this has been," Johan Bruyneel, Armstrong's longtime coach, wrote on his personal website on Friday.

Still, USADA chief executive Travis Tygart said the UCI was "bound to recognize our decision and impose it" as a signatory to the World Anti-Doping Code.

USADA maintains that Armstrong used banned substances as far back as 1996, including the blood-booster EPO and steroids, as well as blood transfusions.

The agency also claims to have blood tests from 2009 and 2010 which were "fully consistent" with doping, at a time when Armstrong was monitored by the biological passport program run by the UCI.

USADA wants to annul all Armstrong's race results from August 1998. At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, he won a bronze medal in the road time trial.

The International Olympic Committee said Friday it will await decisions by the U.S. agency and UCI before taking any steps against the rider.

Even if Armstrong loses the legal battle, the UCI would still be able to regard him as its 1993 world champion in the men's road race in Oslo, Norway.

BREAKING: Major Victory For Voting Rights Advocates As California Legislature Approves Election Day Registration

As voter suppression laws spread across the country, voting rights advocates can take heart: the biggest state in the nation is on the cusp of passing a major voter protection initiative.

Election Day Registration (EDR), which allows citizens to register up to and on Election Day, passed the California State Senate today by a party-line vote of 23-13. AB 1436 had passed the State Assembly in May 47-26.

Under current law, Californians cannot register to vote in the final two weeks before an election, just as many Americans are beginning to tune in. EDR will eliminate that deadline, ensuring that no citizen is disenfranchised because he or she wasn?t registered beforehand.

This won?t just benefit slackers. Historically-disenfranchised citizens like minorities and poorer Americans, will particularly benefit from EDR. On average, studies have found that EDR boosts voter turnout by seven percentage points. Common Cause?s Phillip Ung told ThinkProgress he ?expects voter turnout to increase by the hundreds of thousands? solely as a result of EDR.

Eight states currently allow their citizens to register on Election Day: Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. California is poised to become the latest, and by far the largest, state to enact EDR.

California?s version of EDR differs slightly from the way it?s employed elsewhere. Rather than allowing citizens to register at regular polling stations, as they do in Maine, for instance, California will have Election Day registration at a county registrar?s office, where citizens will be able to vote as well.

The bill now returns to the Assembly for a concurrence vote ? which is all but assured of passage ? due to a small change in the Senate version before reaching Gov. Jerry Brown?s (D) desk. Brown has not commented publicly on the bill, but has been very supportive of election reform efforts in the past and advocates expect he will sign the legislation.

AB 1436 also increases the fine for voter fraud to $50,000, one of the highest penalties in the country.

Assuming Brown signs the bill, it will not take effect until the next presidential election in 2016.

Best Shopping Ecommerce Software For Online Busine...

With every new organization becoming an integral part of the online ecommerce industry, the need to choose appropriate ecommerce software has become crucial to face the competitive online market.

You can consult your friends who have already used or deployed similar software to aid their businesses. Alternatively, you can go through product reviews, questionnaires, and product manuals available on the internet. A right selection of the appropriate software would ensure the maintenance and success of your online business for years to come and thus, take utmost care and caution to choose the software that would compliment your business procedure. The compatibility or user friendliness of the ecommerce software is also crucial for ensuring the success of your online business. If the customers face difficulty in performing the functions required for making online transactions, they will hardly come back again to your website.

Nowadays mostly every website which features products for sale has hosted shopping cart software. This software allows the customer to place the products they want to buy in order just like we take shopping carts when we go to supermarkets for groceries and other items. This usually makes it very simple for customers to buy products online. You have two options that either you rent out an auto responding company to manage this software for you or you can also purchase the software and manage it on your own. Mostly people buy this software as it is a one time investment and you don't have to pay the companies to handle it for you.

But what mostly smart people do is that they rent out auto responding companies and help them to take care of your website's shopping cart and delivery of emails. This will not help you in getting expert services in your business but rather will prevent you from facing technical problems leaving you ample time to concentrate on function and operation of your business.

Data Shredding Basics Technology: Is Smaller Really Better by Santosh Vishwakarma

Just as businesses need to destroy sensitive data, so too is there a need to shred electronic data from computer drives.

About Author

Author: Santosh Vishwakarma Article Tools: With increases in technology, it is simply amazing how much data can be stored in such a small physical space, and how often that data is recoverable if only erased using standard methods.
For computers, the equivalent of shredding is called wiping. If data is wiped from a computer it means that cannot be restored by any means.

Data wiping can be accomplished by using software, which overwrites files, or by using a ?secure delete? command instead of the ?regular delete? command to the operating system.

Why doesn?t just deleting a document or file doesn?t work?

On many computers and the many standard operating systems, simply deleting a file and sending it to the trash bin will not delete the contents of the file it all! It may show that new space is available on the disk and it may show the file as removed from the operating system index, when in fact only the reference to the document was removed well actual contents remain somewhere on the hard disk.

In fact, the file has only become ?dispensable? space and may or may not be overwritten by other newer files. This allows for easy recovery of recently deleted files with various software tools or MS DOS commands.

Sometimes the files may be overwritten or partially overwritten and become unrecoverable, but there may still be traces,Ralph Lauren Pas Cher, and with the right equipment and knowledge, much of this data can be mined from the hard disk.

The Unix operating system has a built in delete command which can be used, and there are various files deleting programs available for windows systems which overwrite the data repeatedly with random binary code making recovery extremely difficult. It intersperses random binary into the files and makes it so random that it is like it is deleted. This is sort of the computer equivalent of shredding paper materials.

One not of caution when using data shredders: It can be possible that after files have been deleted the files may move location. This may happen if the disk has been ?defragmented? and in some cases, may render shredding software ineffective because it doesn?t know where to locate the specific data to be overwritten.

Thus, many people say that really the only absolute ways to permanently get rid of data on the hard drive is the burn it, pour acid on it, or a degausser!

Disc encryption is another method available to increase the security of your data. There?s a program called PGP which can encrypt data before it is stored on a hard disk. The PGP or ?Pretty Good Privacy? is an encryption program for cryptographic privacy and authentication. It?s pretty close to military grade encryption and can be used to protect data in long-term storage such as disk files. It requires a pass phrase to recover encrypted information.

Other Data Storage Devices to Wipe:

Another device to look out for is a flash memory device, such as key ring size USB drives and memory cards. Data stored on these devices can often be recovered even after it has been erased. As of the time of this article there is no official method for destroying these devices. Overwriting may help, but pulverizing the storage is probably the safest option.

Due to the small size of these devices they are extremely easy to misplace drop or forget about? They are also easy to steal or smuggle. In Iraq hundreds and hundreds of these devices were stolen which contained sensitive data about US troops! It is thought that these were smuggled out in the pockets of Iraqi locals working and sold on the black market.

Care must be taken with these devices.

While electronic data storage has become increasingly popular due to the minute space electronic files physically occupy compared to paper, people should realize that the extremely small size comes with a price: They are hard to keep track of! Sometimes, smaller is not better. Electronic data can be harder to permanently erase, easier to misplace, christian louboutin, and easier to steal. 1888 Articles Home | Computer Articles | Online Business Articles Computer RSS Data Shredding Basics Technology: Is Smaller Really Better

Heirloom Design Build Beautiful Home Additions ? |

(articles and photos courtesy of: Better Homes and Gardens)

Here is an article and some photos featuring beautiful home additions, with design and DIY tips.

1.?Colorful Family Room

A two-story addition brings enlarged family spaces, a new master suite, and light to a 1909 home without compromising the character of the original structure. The family wanted a casual living area where they could spend time together rather than a formal living room. Because wall space is limited in the family room, they could afford to go bold with color, opting for a tangy shade of salmon.

2.?Cabinet Division

A freestanding cabinet separates the family room from the kitchen. The family room side houses home entertainment equipment and storage?drawers for tapes and compact discs. At just 6 feet tall, the cabinet stops several feet short of the ceiling, allowing a visual connection between the two spaces and letting Southern light from the family room spill into the kitchen.

3. Kitchen Storage

In your kitchen remodeling?project, try an archway like this one that connects the kitchen to the sunny breakfast room. The kitchen side of the divider is fitted with storage cabinet?for dry goods. The partition makes the spaces on either side feel intimate, yet they still seem like part of a larger room. A beamed ceiling spanning the two areas visually links them and echoes the Craftsman character of the original house.

4. Sunny Breakfast Nook

An inviting breakfast nook with lots of windows protrudes from the back of the house, capturing plenty of light. The space is wrapped in wainscoting, lending it a cozy, cottage feel. The archway cabinets?hold party supplies for entertaining.

5. U?Shape Kitchen

The new space was designed to look as though it could be original to the house. Try pairing kitchen islands, such as this one, with cream-color kitchen cabinets?treated to a brown glaze for an unfitted look that suggests the room evolved over time. Fluted pendant lights strike a contemporary note.

6. Kitchen Cabinets

Multipane doors on kitchen cabinets?suit the period of the house and add depth to cabinet-lined walls. Additional storage?is tucked into the archway and the divider. Double ovens make it easy to cook for large groups.

7. Convenient Mudroom

This new space contains plenty of mudroom storage, cubbies with hooks, and a bench for every family member. A pocket door closes to conceal the mess. The bold salmon color?found in the family room and kitchen?is repeated here.

8. Bathroom Vanity

Bathroom vanities, such as this one with a glowing grid of glass, are smart additions. The unit sits 6 inches from the wall behind it to diffuse light entering through the windows; fluorescent lights concealed in the backsplash?illuminate the glass at night. Glass mosaic tile adorns the shower walls.

9. Rear Deck

The rear home addition, which acknowledges the home?s traditional styling, includes a one-story bump-out containing the mudroom and breakfast room. Decks offer easy access to the outdoors. This one features newels inset with planters to soften the transition between interior and exterior.

10. Main-Level House Floor Plans

A 1,800 square foot home in Chicago receives a 1,430-square-foot addition off the back including a kitchen, family room, breakfast room, and mudroom on the main level. The new kitchen and family rooms are divided by a freestanding cabinet containing pantries on one side and home entertainment equipment on the other. A deck?reflects the home?s Craftsman character, with paneled posts that double as planters.

11. Upper-Level House Floor Plans

An upper-level addition includes a new master suite featuring a large bathroom?and two closets. A beamed ceiling, trim, and wainscoting in the addition reflect the original architectural detailing in the old house.
