Texas Instruments shows off ultrasonic stylus that can work in three dimensions

An ultrasonic stylus from Texas Instruments

Android Central at Mobile World Congress

At Mobile World Congress 2012, Texas Instruments was demonstrating a stylus that communicates its distance from a tablet over ultrasonic frequencies. The tablet in this demo has a microphone in each of its four corners, which can pinpoint exactly where the stylus is pointing at the screen, even if you're not touching it. Of course, the stylus also works perfectly well along the two standard planes, but it's particularly cool when you pull back and the model correspondingly zooms out.

HTC One S hands-on at MWC 2012 (video)

The second of the One. That's another way to describe the HTC One S, the mid-range selection in the Taiwanese company's trio of new devices. Even though it should be considered middle of the road when being compared to a heavy hitter like the One X, it's not hurting for features in the slightest. The S's claim to fame is its scratch-resistant and durable aluminum backing, and adds a highly respectable list of mouth-watering specs to go along with it. Let's have a look-see: 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED panel, 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, the same 8MP rear camera found on the One X along with a VGA front-facing cam, a smallish 1,605mAh battery and 42Mbps HSPA+ radios (which will come in handy when it shows up on T-Mobile this spring).

While we've had the chance to drool all over its bigger brother, the One S still satisfies in nearly every way. The aluminum build was forged using a Micro Arc Oxidation process, and indeed affords us a feeling of security in case the skinny device were to slip through our hands. Given the firm grip we had on it, the chances of something like that happening would be rather slim anyway -- still, better safe than sorry. And the dual-core S3 chipset doesn't disappoint, either, and is going to be a slightly less expensive alternative for anyone who isn't a power user. Add in the same beautiful f/2.0 camera lens with all the Sense 4.0 trimmings, and this will likely stand well amongst its peers. As with the One X, we'd still prefer to see a physical camera button to take full advantage of the swift shutter speed and simultaneous video / still image capture. Want to get a bit closer to the action? Scoop the gallery below and the video after the break.

(AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney fought Saturday to prove he is the strongest challenger to President Barack Obama, an increasingly difficult task given the tight race in his native state of Michigan against surging conservative Rick Santorum.

In the final weekend of campaigning before Tuesday's Michigan and Arizona primaries, Romney focused on central and southeast Michigan's urban and industrial centers in hopes of pulling ahead of Santorum.

With a Michigan victory, Santorum could solidify his place as a real threat to Romney heading into Super Tuesday, the 10-state sweepstakes on March 6. Santorum's victories so far have come in lower-turnout party caucuses.

While Romney kept most of his attention on the Democratic incumbent, he also worked to lay doubt about the core principles of his lightly funded main GOP rival.

Romney is the one facing stubborn doubts from some conservatives for his changed positions on social issues, but he tried to portray Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, as a Washington insider with cracks in his own conservative credentials. Santorum called such criticism "laughable" and said Michigan, where Romney was born and raised and his father was governor, was winnable.

A crowd in Lansing heard Romney accuse Santorum of caving to party leaders on issues he opposed, including financing Planned Parenthood.

"This is not time for lifelong pols who explain why they voted for this or that based on what they were asked to do by their fellow colleagues," Romney told about 300 activists gathered for breakfast at a country club. "I will be a president of principle."

Later in Flint, he declared himself a Washington, D.C., outsider and implied Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, is an insider: "I don't have any political payoffs I have to make."

Romney tried to undermine Santorum's profile as an abortion opponent by noting Santorum's backing in 1996 of fellow Pennsylvanian Arlen Specter in the GOP presidential race. "He supported the pro-choice candidate," Romney told more than 2,000 at a forum in Troy put on by a tea party umbrella group. Santorum spoke to the group, Americans for Prosperity, earlier Saturday.

Santorum, who has portrayed himself as a loyal conservative and is popular among evangelical conservatives, ridiculed Romney's claims.

"It is absolutely laughable to have a liberal governor of Massachusetts suggest that I am not a conservative," Santorum said to cheers to the same group. "He repeatedly gets up and says all these things that he didn't do that he did do. Folks, this is an issue of trust."

The volleys over principle and loyalty punctuate the all-out two-man race in Michigan, leaving behind the two others in the field. Both candidates are spending heavily on television advertising, although the better-funded Romney was laying out more.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul is hardly a factor in Michigan but is airing advertisements criticizing Santorum, which aids Romney. Paul was campaigning in Oklahoma earlier Saturday before making a stop at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was nowhere to be found in the state and has spent scant time in Arizona, which also holds its primary Tuesday.

Gingrich has acknowledged that he has no shot in Michigan or Arizona and has predicted Romney will win. Gingrich aides argue he stands to gain by Santorum or Romney coming out of Tuesday weaker.

Gingrich is betting heavily on Georgia, the state he represented in Congress, and a strong showing in Tennessee on March 6.

On Saturday Gingrich was in California for the state GOP convention. He forecast a drawn-out campaign that would give late-voting states a voice.

"There will not be any lockdown before we get to California," which holds its primary June 5, Gingrich said.

Romney campaigned across southern central and southeast Michigan, where his family name is familiar, and he reminded audiences of his ties to the state. Romney won the GOP primary here during his unsuccessful 2008 bid for the nomination.

In Lansing, the capital, Romney recalled his father's chilly winter inaugurals. Romney's wife, Ann, also born in Michigan, reminisced in introducing the candidate in Troy about growing up a Tigers baseball fan and working for her father's business in the Detroit suburb.

Polls show a dead heat between Romney and Santorum, who is playing up his family's blue-collar background as the grandson of a Pennsylvania coal-miner. "This race is close. This race is winnable. But you've got to want it," Santorum told tea party members in St. Clair Shores.

Romney's attacks are a potential problem for Santorum because he's based his candidacy on presenting himself as an uncompromising conservative, contrasting himself with Romney. The former Massachusetts governor has struggled at times to explain why he's changed his position on abortion and other issues.

Santorum compared the health care bill Romney signed in Massachusetts in 2006 with the one Obama signed in 2010. The federal program is wildly unpopular with conservatives.

"Are you going to vote for someone that says one thing one day anything else the next day that's necessary to win? Or are you going to vote for someone you trust?" Santorum asked the crowd in Troy.

Santorum later made a quick detour to Tennessee, a Super Tuesday state that's gotten much less attention, to speak at a tea party rally in a large church in Chattanooga.

In Tennessee, Santorum rebuked Romney for backing the Wall Street bailout. He acknowledged that he and Romney opposed the auto industry bailout, and said Romney was inconsistent.

"I didn't pick and choose based on who my friends are," Santorum said to loud applause. "These are the biggest issues of this race. And we need a candidate who isn't compromised on every single one of them."

Santorum called Obama "a snob" for saying every American child should be able to go to college.

"Why does Obama want everybody to go to college? So his liberal college professors can be indoctrinating people like he has," Santorum said, drawing a long ovation.

Study: Gingrich, Santorum plans hike deficit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Massive tax cuts proposed by GOP presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum would cause the national debt to explode while Mitt Romney's budget plan could generate red ink in line with current projections, according to a new study released Thursday.

The nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a Washington-based budget watchdog group, estimates that the wrenching budget cuts proposed by Ron Paul would lessen the flow of red ink compared with current policies but still leave the government running a sizable deficit.

The GOP candidates' budget plans provide a sharp contrast with President Barack Obama, who released his latest fiscal blueprint just last week that includes proposals to raise taxes on the wealthy.

Like Obama, the GOP candidates have the luxury of suspending political reality and assuming lawmakers would quickly enact their ideas into law.

That translates into a tax code in which taxes on investments and capital gains are sharply reduced or eliminated. Each GOP candidate would eliminate inheritance taxes on large estates. And tax rates on individuals would be cut as well ? all in the face of deficits that economists say would eventually cripple the economy.

The results, according to the study, would be higher deficits, except in the case of Paul, whose spending cuts dwarf anything being considered by his three rivals.

According to the study, Gingrich's plan would add $7 trillion to the nation's debt over the coming nine years ? almost doubling the deficits that would be recorded if the government basically ran on autopilot. Santorum's plan would add $4.5 trillion over the period, or about $500 billion to the deficit every year on average.

By contrast, Romney's proposal would add $250 billion to the deficit over nine years, though that estimate was generated before he unveiled a new tax proposal this week that could add considerably to the deficit.

And Paul, whose budget plans include eliminating five Cabinet departments, immediately ending operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and sharply cutting federal programs like Medicaid and food stamps, would reduce the deficit by $2.2 trillion. He is the only candidate whose spending cuts exceed the amount of revenue lost by cutting taxes.

By the end of fiscal 2016, little more than a month before Election Day, Gingrich's plan would produce a deficit of 7.8 percent of the economy, or almost $1.5 trillion. Santorum's blueprint would produce a deficit in the $1.2 trillion range, or 6.5 percent of gross domestic product. And Romney's plan ? given the benefit of the doubt since his new tax plan is so vague ? would generate a 2016 deficit of between $700-800 billion or so. Paul's plan would leave a 2016 deficit of almost $500 billion.

Obama's budget claims a $649 billion deficit by 2016, relying on tax increases to do it.

The group didn't publish specific deficit figures for 2016 but provided estimates of them as a percentage of GDP to The Associated Press, which calculated them based on the economic estimates of the Congressional Budget Office.

The four GOP candidates vying to replace Obama each promise sweeping tax cuts, even as the deficit under current policies would never fall below $600 billion over the coming decade.

Gingrich, for example, would give taxpayers the option of a 15 percent flat tax rate, while Santorum promises to reduce the current five-bracket system to two, with rates of 28 percent and 10 percent. Each idea would mean trillions of dollars less in revenue for the government.

Romney's latest tax plan would cut the top income tax rate from 35 percent to 28 percent and the other rates by 20 percent each, paid for by broadening the tax base and eliminating numerous deductions. But the plan lacks sufficient specifics to be "scored" with any precision.

The candidates' ambitious budget plans contrast with GOP leaders in Congress, who have focused on retaining the full menu of Bush-era tax cuts rather than attempting to cut taxes further ? and have opened the door to higher tax revenues as part of a comprehensive deficit-cutting deal.

Last week, Obama proposed tax increases of almost $2 trillion over the coming decade ? chiefly by ending Bush-era cuts on individual income exceeding $200,000 and year and family income exceeding $250,000.

The budget group's advisers include many Democratic deficit hawks and Republicans unafraid to advocate for higher taxes. The group acknowledged plenty of wiggle room in the study since many of the candidates' proposals are vague or haven't been reviewed by official sources, like the Congressional Budget Office.

The Tax Policy Center, a respected joint project of the Urban Institute and the Brookings Institution, provided the basis for many of the estimates of the candidates' tax proposals.

The group offers three different scenarios for each candidate, which incorporated different assumptions that depend on how vague or specific a candidate's proposals are. The group chiefly trumpeted an "intermediate" scenario that represented the group's best estimate of the candidate's budget plans.

By contrast, the Gingrich campaign Thursday produced an estimate by a friendly economist that predicts his budget would balance by the end of his first term and that economic growth under his supply-side tax cuts would average 4.4 percent a year over the coming decade, far higher than predicted by the budget group.

Bill Moyers: WATCH: Kathleen Hall Jamieson on Debates, Fox News, and Truth

Political communications expert Kathleen Hall Jamieson appeared on Moyers & Company last weekend. In this online-exclusive portion, Jamieson offers positive reviews of the Republican debates and some Fox News coverage, how audience participation at a debate distorts its purpose, super PAC attack ads that demonstrate misinformation at its worst, and what local citizens can do to fight back against deceptive campaign advertising.

Some notable quotes from Jamieson:

"The point this year that I think is worth making is that the Fox debates have been strong and have held candidates accountable, and the Fox interviews have, as well. We haven't had a chance to see something comparable on the Democratic side because of course we have an incumbent Democrat."
"By permitting audiences to cheer and jeer and boo, [the debates] have created a context in which the viewer at home is not watching the candidate and responding to the candidate, but is instead responding to the interaction between that candidate and an audience... You are being cued to respond to the question and the answer in a way that doesn't let you, yourself, reflect on the meaning of that answer."
"The advantage that Newt Gingrich has had in debates is an ability to play very effectively to the partisans in the audience. I think he is not understanding how some of those exchanges can come off to independents and moderates whom he would ultimately need were he the nominee and wanted to win the general election."
"If this pact [between Massachusetts Senate candidates Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren] works, it could become another kind of solution to a problem out there of third party air pollution."
"At the local level, debates are still... the easiest way for people to gain information about candidates' differences and similarities... If you can get the national position of a party clarified and the members of Congress start to run on that position or alternatively the other side attacks on that position, then your knowledge level about Congress is increased."

How to Write a Restaurant Business Plan, the Essentials ...

Restaurants have one of the highest failure rates. The nature of the business in dealing with perishables and the fickle tastes of people is difficult to grasp. Many lenders simply exclude them from their portfolios in general but everyone knows a great restaurant can create a lot of wealth for the owners.

Never forget this statement, lenders and investors are sophisticated in commerce and they know when someone is on their level in business knowledge. You must distinguish yourself, just like stock market investors, lenders invest in people. Do not fear your short comings but show how you HAVE experienced advisers available.

Most necessary information related to business is basic but they want to see you have a basic insight into overall economic influences as well. Read and watch financial television to learn and be comfortable with discussions in those areas. After a time you will begin to see the conversations are very similar. You now have insight into the content of your restaurant business plan, it is the same discussion.

Another suggestion to prepare for writing your plan is go online and search for annual reports for restaurants traded on the stock exchange; they are usually free of charge and useful even if they are old. Most of them are mind numbing at first, study until you see the same pattern you found watching the TV shows. Get some basic information about financial statements just to learn the layout and how the numbers relate and tell the health of the company. Buy a book about investing in stocks to absorb the mindset of an investor.

You should be able to demonstrate a clear and fundamental understanding of how the economy and other outside factors will affect your enterprise. Knowing facts about your competitors and even publicly traded restaurants will show a level of experience you may not even have but they will see you belong to the top 1/10% of your industry and every other person who brings a deal in front of them.

Unless you intend to raise a million dollars or more you should research and write your restaurant business plan yourself. The preparation to do so will engrain the process into your mind and the command of the information will impress your lending prospect. Be sure to highlight every small difference related to why you believe in your venture. Keep in mind very small improvements in long established industries have made many people very successful.

Read a little about persuasive writing and use a formal style with no contractions, slang or industry jargon which is not explained.

Buying a template will help you organize your thoughts and provide a framework for all your expertise to be displayed. These are very helpful. Once you master the basics, admittedly a large body of information, begin to focus on your specialty, here are two examples:

Maybe you are interested in starting a caf? and need a caf? business plan. Here you will begin to build your case about why you think you have found an opportunity. This could be how an area underserved because it has experienced huge growth and residents drive a long distance. Demonstrate a broad perspective.

Regretfully, the bar business does well in a good location with a bad economy. Keep in mind people do not go to a bar to drink, they go to socialize. Bars should work well anytime but they can be recession proof. Your approach will be the social aspect of writing the bar business plan and why you have the edge to make one work.

Hopefully you are very talented for the restaurant industry but remember, every talent, once discovered, must be developed. Know where you want to go, this is a clear goal. Identify every possible need to reach the goal, and then list what you have. This is the first step to writing a great restaurant business plan.

The author began his first company at sixteen years of age, forty years ago. He currently manages several companies in different industries. He is writing from a broad base of business experience, a solid foundation for any venture. Recently he has begun offer environmental services for air quality reporting to natural gas producers as well as insights for how to produce income online.

He has written many pans including restaurant business plans.

Wishing You Great Success,

Dusty Farrell

Investing in the Gold Market

? February 20th, 2012 ? Filed under Investing ? Tagged Gold, Investing, Market Comments Off

Recently, the gold market has continued to find new record levels on a regular basis, nevertheless, for the time being, the market appears to be struggling.

We have seen many pull backs of this nature in the past, however the metal has eventually continued on its rise. The gold bull run is now into its ninth year. Trying to call an end to the metal?s relentless rise has been a fruitless task for a very long time indeed.

However, it must be remembered that back in 2008 the gold market fell almost 30% from its highs before recovering, so reversals can be very nasty indeed.

If you?re your looking to invest in the gold market, one opportunity that is certainly worth considering is spread betting. This form of investment offers a range of benefits over other forms of trading such as the speed at which you can trade, the number of markets available and, quite simply, the ease at which you can open and close trades.

As with any other form of investment, however, such as buying a house, trading stocks or simply having a pension, spread betting does have a negative side.

If you spread bet, you can actually lose more than you initially invested. So why would you consider it as part of your trading and investment strategy?

Spread betting may not be the be-all-and-end-all of trading, but it has a number of advantages. For a start, spread betting offers a solution that covers tax free* trading and quick access to global markets.

The reason why spread betting is tax free is because you are not actually buying or selling any assets, nor are you buying or selling the rights to any stocks or shares. You are purely speculating on the future value of a financial market. As a result, spread bets are not subject to capital gains, stamp duty or income tax*.

Furthermore, the quick access to thousands of worldwide financial markets is a key feature. You can speculate on gold but you can also trade the level of a stock market like the DAX 30 or FTSE 100, foreign exchange markets such as the Euro/Yen pair, and, naturally, you can spread bet on shares. You can even speculate on the price of commodities such as Sugar and Platinum.

Also, unlike traditional share trading, you can sell a market; financial spread betting lets you trade in both directions. If your research leads you to think that the price of gold will decrease, you can speculate on it to go down. If you think that the price of the yellow metal will increase, you can spread bet on it to go up.

Financially, as discussed, investing does have its risks. Nevertheless, there are things you can do in order to reduce the potential drawbacks. Adding a Guaranteed Stop Loss Order to your spread bet helps to reduce your risks. If you start to lose on a trade, and the market reaches your pre-determined Stop Loss level, then your order will close the trade and you won?t lose any more capital.

So, whilst there are many positives, you must also understand the potential disadvantages. Financial spread betting carries a high level of risk so you should only speculate with money you can afford to lose.

It is important that, before trading, you ensure that spread betting matches your investment needs, you should familiarise yourself with the risks involved and, where necessary, seek independent advice.

* Based on UK tax law. If you pay tax in another jurisdiction then tax law may vary.

Most of its assets, including the iPAD trademark are now the property of eight different banks and it's debts exceed $1 billion, which probably explains why the company is demanding so much money from Apple.
