Three dead after bus from church camp overturns in Indianapolis

Three people are dead and several more are critically injured after a bus returning from a church summer camp overturned outside Indianapolis. NBC's Lester Holt reports.

By Tracy Jarrett, NBC News

Three people are dead and several more are critically injured after a bus returning from a church summer camp overturned in Indianapolis, officials said.

Thirty-seven passengers were on the bus when it overturned, entrapping five people, the Indianapolis Fire Department said on its Twitter feed. A large diesel spill resulted and HazMat crews responded to the scene, they said.

Six passengers were treated and released on the scene.

An Indiana Fire Department spokesman said 28 passengers were taken to area hospitals: 10 to?Riley Hospital for Children; one to Wishard Memorial Hospital; nine to?Indiana University Methodist Hospital; two to St. Vincent Pharma Center; and six to Community North Hospital.?

The passengers were reported to be from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church, which is in Indianapolis, according to its website.

"Please be in prayer for our church family as we look to the Lord for grace during the teen bus accident today," the church said in a statement posted on Facebook. "Details will be released at a later time, but prayers are our greatest need right now."

Three injured passengers were taken to St. Vincent Pharma Center in Indianapolis, spokesman Johnny Smith confirmed to NBC News.

All patients have been transported from the scene, the Indianapolis Fire Department said on its Twitter feed.

Samsung dominates, Apple stalls in Q2 global smartphone shipments

Rosa Golijan / NBC News

A Samsung Galaxy S4, right, with the older Galaxy S3 behind it.

The second quarter of 2013 brought more good news for Samsung but less so for Apple, at least as far as smartphone sales go. But the year isn't over yet ? in fact, the toughest fight is yet to come.

Tracking firm IDC's numbers on global smartphone shipments for April through June show huge growth: about 238 million units were shipped, an increase of more than 50 percent over the same period last year.

Samsung continues its domination, shipping about 72 million devices, many of those from its flagship Galaxy S line of phones. The series has sold in record numbers around the world, owing to a huge list of futuristic features and top-of-the-line hardware. That said, Juniper Research reports that demand for the highest-end phones has slackened as budget buyers make the switch to Android and go for more inexpensive handsets.

Apple, despite selling 20 percent more iPhones this quarter (about 31 million) than in 2012's Q2, actually sold fewer of them than it did in the first three months of this year. This had the effect of making the company's share of the smartphone market drop, from 18 percent in March to 14 percent now.

Juniper Research suggests this is because Apple issued a rare confirmation that it is announcing "amazing new products" this fall, among which is likely to be a new iPhone and potentially a wearable "iWatch" device.

Motorola, which hasn't figured in smartphone sales essentially since its 2011 merger with Google, is also preparing for what may be its biggest launch ever: the assembled-in-the-U.S. Moto X. The much-leaked mid-range Android phone is widely expected to move quite a few units.

So while Samsung and a few others have their big products for the year already in the wild, Apple and Motorola are just getting started, especially as they gear up for the all-important holiday season.

The smaller (and once mighty) phone makers have had mixed success: Nokia posted moderate growth, though it, too, has big plans for later this year. LG, Lenovo, ZTE, and other Asian manufacturers have seen their modest numbers go up, but they're still bit players. And BlackBerry (as it is now known, rather than Research In Motion) appears to have disappointed again, despite its BB10 devices receiving a warm critical welcome.

We'll keep an eye on the news and numbers; the real battle for dominance will be at the end of 2013, not the beginning.

Turkey's Erdogan threatens to sue Times for publishing critical letter

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Friday threatened to sue the Times of London for publishing an open letter by a group of celebrities, academics and others criticizing his handling of anti-government protests.

Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon and Ben Kingsley were among those who signed the letter that accused Erdogan's government this week of "dictatorial rule" and of causing the deaths of five protesters who died after clashes with police.

"The press wants to throw mud to see if it sticks. The Times is renting out its own pages for money," Erdogan told reporters in comments broadcast live by NTV channel. "This is the Times' failing. We will pursue legal channels regarding the Times."

Protesters demanded Erdogan resign as they staged the country's fiercest anti-government demonstrations in decades in Istanbul, Ankara and other major cities beginning in late May.

Many accused Erdogan of adopting an authoritarian tilt or greater religious conservatism after his Islamist-rooted AK Party won the last three elections, increasing its share of the vote each time.

Erdogan has dismissed the protesters as "looters" and "terrorists" and accused foreign governments and media outlets of stoking the civil disturbances.

Erdogan said the signatories of the letter, taken out as an full-page advertisement in the Times, had "rented out their thoughts" and did not genuinely support democracy.

"If they truly believed in democracy, they couldn't have displayed such a lack of character to call the leader of a party that won 50 percent of the vote a dictator," Erdogan said.

The letter also accused Erdogan of undermining the principles of a free press for jailing dozens of journalists in recent years.

The Times had no immediate comment on Erdogan's remarks.

South Carolina Finds That Jadeveon Clowney Did Not Violate Any NCAA Rules by Speaking With Jay Z

Jadeveon Clowney did not break any NCAA rules or accept any impermissible benefits from Jay-Z when he spoke to him recently about possibly joining Roc Nation Sports after the upcoming college football season. At least, that's what the University of South Carolina found out when they conducted a quick investigation into Clowney's relationship with Jay-Z after reports emerged earlier this week about Roc Nation Sports' interest in signing Clowney in 2014. Late yesterday, they put out this handwritten note to clear Clowney of any wrongdoing and to point out that his contact with Jay-Z did not violate any NCAA rules:

It's a little weird that USC Athletic Director Steve Fink made the announcement through a note. It's also a little weird that USC sped through the investigation process in less than a week. But at least they looked into it themselves rather than allowing the NCAA to get involved right away. And if nothing else, that should help Clowney stay eligible for the 2013 college football season. Stay tuned to see if the NCAA decides to get involved in the investigation at some point in the near future.

(AP) ? A gloomy outlook from Caterpillar, the world's largest construction equipment company, tugged the stock market lower in midday trading Wednesday.

Caterpillar said its earnings fell 43 percent in the second quarter as China's economy slowed and commodity prices sank. The company also warned of slowing revenue and profit, and its stock dropped $1.37, or 1.6 percent, to $84.16.

Apple led a rise in technology stocks after it beat analysts' estimates for quarterly earnings and revenue. The company reported late Tuesday that it shipped more iPhones in the latest quarter and also announced plans to introduce new products in the fall. Apple jumped $20.60, or 5 percent, to $439.65.

Outside of technology stocks, the broader market edged down. Utilities led eight of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 lower.

Shortly after noon, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 31 points, or 0.2 percent, to 15,535.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down four points, or 0.2 percent, at 1,688. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index climbed 16 points, or 0.5 percent, to 3,596.

Despite some high-profile earnings misses, the overall picture for corporate profits has looked good for the second quarter. More than six out of every 10 companies have turned in earnings that beat Wall Street's estimates, according to S&P Capital IQ.

"Yes, they're beating expectations, but expectations are so low," said Brad McMillan, chief investment officer at Commonwealth Financial. Outside of banks, earnings don't look so good, he said. "You can't call this a blowout quarter so far."

Analysts forecast that second-quarter earnings for companies in the S&P 500 increased 3.9 percent over the same period last year. But they expect revenue to shrink 0.7 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves, AT&T fell 82 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $34.98. AT&T's profits fell in the latest quarter as costs surged. The company's coffers were drained by smartphone sales, which it subsidizes in the hope of making money back over the life of two-year contracts.

In Europe, a broad gauge of economic activity reached the highest level since January 2012, sending stock markets in Germany and France higher. Financial information company Markit said Wednesday that its monthly purchasing managers' index for the countries that use the euro currency increased for the fourth month running.

France's CAC 40 rose 1 percent and Germany's DAX rose 0.8 percent.

The report out of Europe pushed prices for U.S. government bonds down and their yields up. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.58 percent from 2.51 percent late Tuesday.

Signs of economic strength usually lead traders to sell Treasurys, considered one of the safest places in the world to park cash.

Military Finds Bomb at Aparecida Shrine Prior to Pope?s Visit

? Wikipedia/Ag?ncia Brasil

APARECIDA, Brazil ? The Brazilian military discovered an improvised bomb today in a parking garage bathroom at the shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, which Pope Francis is due to visit on Wednesday.

?It was a homemade device with little potential to cause fatalities,? according to a statement of the Brazilian Air Force. ?It is worth pointing out that such episodes formed part of our security forces? training in Aparecida and at no point were civilians? lives in danger.?

The bomb has already been destroyed. It was discovered around 11:30 am Rio de Janeiro time, during the completion of simulated exercises by security forces, according to Brazil?s Grupo Estado.

Pope Francis landed in Rio de Janeiro this afternoon and was driven through the city in a car with its windows down, as tens of thousands of faithful swarmed around the Roman Pontiff.

He was transferred to an open-air Popemobile, and later addressed representatives of the Brazilian government and met in private with the nation?s president, Dilma Rousseff.

During his address, Pope Francis urged World Youth Day pilgrims ?to show consideration towards each other? and ?the sympathy needed to establish friendly dialogue.?

He added that he had come to Brazil in Jesus? name, ?to feed the flame of fraternal love that burns in every heart.?

Pope Francis is due to arrive at the Aparecida shrine the morning of July 24, venerating the image of Brazil?s patroness. He will say Mass at the basilica at 10:30 a.m., and then meet with local bishops and seminarians.

Aparecida will host some 5,000 members of security forces on the day of Pope Francis? visit to the city.

US surveillance, Syria at issue on defense bill

Gen. Dempsey's nomination for a second term as Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman due to his dissatisfaction with the officer's responses to questions about the potential use of U.S. military power in Syria. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? Limits on secret U.S. surveillance programs and President Barack Obama's push to help Syrian rebels were in dispute as the House weighed legislation to fund the nation's military.

The House planned to begin debate Tuesday on the $598.3 billion defense spending bill for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, and late Monday the House Rules Committee voted to allow votes on the contentious issues.

Tea party conservatives and liberal Democrats insisted that debate on the bill include amendments changing the way the National Security Agency conducts its recently disclosed program of collecting phone records of millions of Americans. The same unusual coalition joined forces on amendments barring the administration from arming the Syrian rebels without congressional approval.

Republican leaders struggled to limit amendments on the overall bill, concerned about hampering the president's national security and anti-terrorism efforts. The GOP also wanted to avoid the embarrassment of obstructionist rank-and-file Republicans joining forces with Democrats in rejecting the framework ? known as the congressional "rule" ? for considering the bill if their amendments were ignored.

Pleading with Rules Committee members Monday, Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich., sponsor of an amendment on the NSA, asked his colleagues to "allow the voice of the people to be heard."

Amash said his measure would allow the NSA to collect data and records, but only if the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court said in a statement that the collection of data pertains to an individual under investigation. Otherwise, the NSA would lose its funding.

Former NSA systems analyst Edward Snowden leaked documents last month that revealed that the NSA had collected phone records, while a second NSA program forced major Internet companies to turn over contents of communications to the government. Leaders in Congress, such as House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., have strongly defended the programs, but libertarian lawmakers and liberals have expressed serious concerns about the government's surveillance in a fierce debate over privacy and national security.

The overall defense spending bill drew an expected veto threat from the White House, which argued that it would force cuts to education, health research and other domestic programs to boost spending for the Pentagon.

The House also will consider an amendment that would bar funds for any military action in Syria if it violated the War Powers Resolution. Another amendment would prohibit money to fund military or paramilitary operations in Egypt.

Republicans and Democrats argued that Congress should have a say in what amounted to taking sides in a sectarian war.

The debate over Syria comes as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in a cautionary assessment of more aggressive American military action, said establishing a no-fly zone to protect Syrian rebels would require hundreds of U.S. aircraft at a cost of as much as $1 billion a month with no assurance it would change the momentum in the 2-year-old civil war.

In a letter to the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Gen. Martin Dempsey outlined the risks, costs and benefits of five potential steps as the Obama administration weighs its next move to help the opposition battling the forces of President Bashar Assad. The sectarian conflict has killed at least 93,000, according to United Nations estimates, and displaced millions, prompting more calls on Capitol Hill for greater American action.

Dempsey said the decision to use force in Syria is not one to be taken lightly.

"It is no less than an act of war," he wrote. And once that decision is made, the U.S. has to be prepared for what may come next. "Deeper involvement is hard to avoid," he said.

The United States has been providing humanitarian assistance to the opposition seeking to overthrow the Assad government. The administration has recently taken steps to arm rebels with weapons and ammunition, a move welcomed by some in Congress but troubling to other lawmakers.

Separately, members of the House Intelligence Committee who had balked weeks ago at the Obama administration's first attempt to pay for lethal aid for the Syrian rebels said Monday that their concerns largely had been addressed.

"After much discussion and review, we got a consensus that we could move forward with what the administration's plans and intentions are in Syria consistent with committee reservations," Rogers said in a statement.

Dempsey spelled out costs, ranging from millions to billions of dollars, for options that included training and arming vetted rebel groups, conducting limited strikes on Syria's air defenses, creating a no-fly zone, establishing a buffer zone and controlling Syria's massive stockpile of chemical weapons.

The military leader said that while these steps would help the opposition and pressure Assad's government, "We have learned from the past 10 years, however, that it is not enough to simply alter the balance of military power without careful consideration of what is necessary in order to preserve a functioning state."

Dempsey's reference was to the more than a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Joint Chiefs chairman said creation of a no-fly zone would neutralize Syria's air defenses. It would require "hundreds of ground and sea-based aircraft, intelligence and electronic warfare support, and enablers for refueling and communications. Estimated costs are $500 million initially, averaging as much as a billion dollars per month over the course of a year."

Exclusive: Casey Stoner to test factory Honda in Japan

By Matthew Birt -

MotoGP

?22 July 2013 14:59

Double world champion Casey Stoner will make a dramatic return to MotoGP action next month when he tests a factory Honda RC213V at the Twin Ring Motegi track in Japan, MCN can reveal.

The outspoken but blindingly fast Australian, who retired from MotoGP immediately after the final race of 2012 in Valencia last November, will take part in a two-day test on August 6-7 at the Honda-owned track.

An official announcement from HRC confirming the testing plan will be released tomorrow (Tuesday).

The test is one of four scheduled over the coming weeks that Stoner will fit in around his V8 Supercar commitments in Australia.

Stoner?s speed and experience will be used to help HRC technical staff on development of the 2014 factory RC213V.

And Honda insiders say he will also evaluate the performance potential of a new production 1000cc racer that the Japanese factory will make available next year.

The forthcoming test session is certainly not just Stoner turning up for a quick play on a 260bhp 1000cc machine.

His former crew chief Cristian Gabbarini, who is now a vital part of Repsol Honda as technical supervisor, is attending and Ohlins is understood to have prepped a set of 2012 spec forks to be shipped to Japan direct from last weekend's Laguna Seca MotoGP race in California.

And the bike he will ride will be set-up identical to how he raced an RC213V to fifth place at Motegi last season.

Stoner switched to four wheels after walking away from MotoGP last year, the 27-year-old becoming disillusioned with the direction of the sport.

He also indicated he wanted to spend more time with his young family at home in Australia when he made the bombshell announcement about his retirement plans on the eve of the French Grand Prix at Le Mans almost 15 months ago.

News of his surprise return to MotoGP action will trigger intense speculation about his future plans on two wheels.

Ever since the 2007 and 2011 world champion walked away from MotoGP, there has been a constant stream of rumours that he will make wild card appearances in his home race at Phillip Island and Motegi in October.

Speculation has also been rife that both Ducati and Honda have been talking to Stoner in recent weeks about trying to tempt him back into MotoGP full-time in the future.

The testing plan will do little to douse the flames about the wild card appearances, which would come at a critical stage of the world championship, with Laguna Seca winner Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa potentially battling it out with reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo for the 2013 crown.

HRC though has made it crystal clear that Stoner will not race as a wild card in his home round on October 20 or a week later in Honda?s home race in Japan.

Both races don?t clash with his car racing exploits in Australia and many were hoping that Stoner would step out of retirement to attempt to win an incredible seventh successive race on home soil.

Stoner won 38 races for Ducati and Repsol Honda and he also won seven races in the 250 and 125cc classes.

He is regarded by many as one of the most naturally gifted riders in history and unrivalled for raw speed.

The following is from the Virginia Sierra Club. I strongly agree with Glen Besa that Dominion Virginia Power (the likely winner) "should be required to move forward with offshore wind development without delay and be prohibited from dragging its feet in fully developing Virginia's entire lease area." The problem is, I don't have much faith that they WILL move forward without dealy and not drag their feet. We'll see...
Sierra Club Urges Rapid and Full Development of Entire Offshore Area

[Washington, DC] - Today the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced it will hold a competitive lease sale on Sept. 4, 2013 in which it will auction off approximately 112,799 acres offshore Virginia for commercial wind energy development.

In response Glen Besa, Director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter, issued the following statement:

"After years of intensive problem-solving attention by all stakeholders involved, to include military, shipping, government and environmental interests, we are finally arriving close to the point in the Federal process where we pass the baton of our work to Virginia's actual developers of its offshore wind resources".

"While we applaud the diligence of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management to move aggressively with the lease sale process, we also urge their continued dedication to moving offshore wind development along. ?The eventual winning bidder, likely Dominion Virginia Power, should be required to move forward with offshore wind development without delay and be prohibited from dragging its feet in fully developing Virginia's entire lease area."

"Virginian's are already suffering the impacts of climate disruption from increased flooding on our coasts to heat waves and super storms. We're ready to build a cleaner, safer and more reliable renewable energy economy here. We must move as quickly as possible to catch up to other states who are ready to start installing full-scale offshore wind farms along the Northeast coast in the next few years."

VINCENT BONSIGNORE: Dallas Cowboys are California dreaming

,

OXNARD -- The pleasant 65-degree weather Sunday in this coastal Ventura County city was a distinct tipoff the Cowboys were no longer in Dallas.

And considering the scorching 93 degrees most of Texas was sweating through back home - with 43 percent humidity - that was a good thing.

As for the hundreds upon hundreds of fans decked out in Cowboys gear screaming their favorite players' names through most of a late afternoon practice, well, that was Dallas through and through.

In other words, you can take the Cowboys out of Texas but that won't stop their legion of fans from following them wherever they end up.

On Sunday - and for the next six weeks or so - that would be Oxnard, California, the Cowboys' on-again, off-again summer training camp home.

And a cooler, more agreeable home it is, the players soaking in the delightful conditions as they took their first step on a journey they hope will deliver them to the postseason for the first time in three seasons.

Rather than withering in the steamy conditions back home in Texas.

"It was a great start," Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said. "I think our football team took some steps to get better. I think they did that during the offseason, so I'm excited about the way the day went and what we're doing to get better."

The Cowboys returned to Oxnard for the eighth time since 2001 in search of a launching pad more conducive to building a championship team, the hope being the better weather results in

better work habits resulting in a team better prepared to navigate its way back to the playoffs.

Somewhere Dallas hasn't been since 2009.

Three years without a postseason appearance doesn't go over very well in Dallas, most notably the big office occupied by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones at the club's Valley Ranch headquarters.

Presumably, a fourth straight season out of the playoffs will put head coach Jason Garrett in imminent danger of losing his job, although Jones downplayed any of that talk as his club prepared to kick off training camp.

"Everything I'm thinking about is not only about how to beat the Giants when we open up (the season), but also about what our future is in a plus manner or in a positive way with Jason," Jones said. "I look to the future with Jason, not just through his contract that we're sitting here with right now. I think he has a couple of years left on his contract, but that's not a thought.

"It is not what is implied when you say, 'This is an Armageddon year for him.' It's not that with me."

Read what you want into that, but it sure sounds like the dreaded vote of confidence to me.

And with Jones working on his seventh coach over his 24 years owning the Cowboys, it's obvious he has a tendency to quickly run out of patience if things are operating at an optimal level - optimal being the Cowboys consistently knocking on the door of the Super Bowl.

Still, Jones went out of his way to reduce the heat to the seat on which Garrett sits, pointing out Garrett's strong relationship with Romo and the role Garrett's played in Romo's development iinitially as an assistant and now the head coach.

"He's been directly involved in the coaching of Romo for six years. When he got here, Romo had never had the same guy two years in a row. We've got to take advantage of that. His safety-net presence for what we're doing not only as a team but on offense is a big part of the plan. It gives us a real advantage. "Romo has the kind of skills, by everyone that has ever been around him, to do what we're asking him to do. I don't mind telling you, it'd be tough to go there if you didn't have Jason who has been involved and right there as quote, if you will, 'the safety net' as to how we're going to not only put the team together, but what we're doing offensively, make no mistake about it.

"To answer your question specifically, one of the neatest things about not only this year but a positive about this year is that, if you're in close here, you see how Jason is responding to obviously unsatisfactory times. And I can tell you firsthand that's impressive, so I like that looking ahead at the future. It is very good."

Perhaps, but that didn't prevent sweeping changes on the coaching staff this year as Garrett and Jones try to strike the perfect balance, the most notable change Garrett relinquishing play calling duties in favor of taking a more broader role in the running of the team. Garrett, who has called plays for the Cowboys since 2007, is handing the job over to former Raiders head coach Bill Callahan.

"It'll just give you a practical opportunity to kind of step away from the offense a little bit," Garrett said. "I made a very conscious effort over the last couple of years to coach the whole football team. I spent time with the defensive guys on their side of the practice field. I spent a lot of time in the defensive meetings and the special teams meetings. I've always done that.

But just the mechanics of someone else calling the actual plays allows me to maybe take a different view of it. So you'll see that on the practice field. That's how we operated all throughout the offseason in our OTAs and our mini-camp, and it worked very smoothly for us, and we'll continue to do that."

As for Romo, he was cleared for full practice Sunday after having a cyst removed from his back last April. Sunday also marked his first practice after signing an eight-year, $108 million contract that includes $55 million in guaranteed money.

That's an enormous amount of money invested in a quarterback that hasn't won a playoff game - and it's more than Super Bowl winner Joe Flacco got from the Baltimore Raven last offseason.

But the Cowboys are clearly comfortable with hitching their wagon to Romo, and step one was getting through the initial practice with a clean bill of health.

"I feel good," Romo said. "I've been running and throwing and doing all of that stuff. But I was excited about getting out here. Honestly, just the smell of the grass of a football field is a great feeling. You never want to take that for granted."

The Cowboys aren't taking anything for granted these days. Three seasons out of the playoffs will do that to a team. Vincent.bonsignore@dailynews.com @DailyNewsVinny
