Boston College incoming freshman Michael Matheson was selected by the Florida Panthers in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Matheson is a 6-foot-1, 178-pound defenseman from Pointe-Claire, Quebec. He played last season with the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the United States Hockey League. Matheson registered 26 points - 11 goals and 15 assists - last winter.
Matheson will enroll at Boston College in September 2012 and be eligible to play in the 2012-13 season.
Matheson is the 14th Eagle in the last 25 years - and 11th in the last 16 years - have been selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft. He joins Brian Leetch (ninth, 1986), Craig Janney (13th, 1986), Bill Guerin (fifth, 1989), Marty Reasoner (14th, 1996), Brooks Orpik (18th, 2000), Krys Kolanos (19th, 2000), Chuck Kobasew (14th, 2001), Brian Boyle (26th, 2003), Patrick Eaves (29th, 2003), Cory Schneider (26th, 2004), Nick Petrecki (28th, 2007), Chris Kreider (19th, 2009) and Kevin Hayes (24th, 2012) as Boston College first-round draftees.

In other Boston College hockey news during the first round of the NHL Entry Draft on Friday, two-time first-team All-America selection Brian Dumoulin was included in a trade from Carolina to Pittsburgh. The Penguins traded center Jordan Staal for Dumoulin, center Brandon Sutter and the No. 8 selection in the 2012 NHL Draft. Dumoulin, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound product of Biddeford, Maine, registered 83 points - 11 goals and 72 assists - in 123 career games at the Heights. He was originally selected by the Hurricanes in the second round (51st overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
