For small business owners the debate over pay per click (PPC) advertising vs. organic search engine optimization (SEO) rankings has continued to be a highly debated question that doesn?t have an obvious answer. Webrageous conducted a survey of 500 B2B marketers. The survey results claim that pay per click advertising is more effective in generating leads compared to organic SEO. These findings dispute a web survey by Webmarketing 123 that claims SEO to be the most effective medium of generating leads online.

Webrageous backs up their claims by additional research conducted by Wordstream who believes that Google paid clicks account for 64.4 percent of clicks in search engine results. Compare this to organic clicks, which would account for the remaining 35.4 percent of search engine click though.

?There is no doubt at all, according to our research, that pay per click advertising is the fastest way to generate leads.? Said Webrageous Director of Marketing David Chapman. ?While it usually takes a year or more to see positive lead generating results through SEO and through social marketing, well-managed pay per click campaigns will be generating leads after just a couple of days.?

Although there is much dispute on which medium is best, it is important to keep in mind that both forms of advertising offer different benefits and will satisfy different needs. When considering which medium to use, ask yourself where your ideal client would come from. Would they click on a paid advertisement or would they prefer the organic listings? The biggest advantage of organic listings is that some searchers trust organic listings over paid listings. A number of searchers may give added trust to websites that appear in Google?s organic or free results vs. the paid results where a business owner?s fight for prime ad positions based off of how deep their pockets are.

In an ideal situation, companies would use both of these marketing tactics together to reach their goals.
